Inconspicuously nestled in an Ogden industrial park, a high-tech facility can help police train for any kind of nightmare scenario.  The Swanson Tactical Training Center can become the scene of a hostage situation in a bank, a convenience store hold-up, a school shooting, or a person barricaded inside their home.

Police officers try to diffuse a volatile situation in a reality-based training scenario. It's part of an ongoing training put on by the Crisis Intervention Team.

The Crisis Intervention Team is a coalition of police officers and mental health professionals who provide a week's worth of intensive training on mental illness. The goal is to help officers quickly figure out what is going on and help diffuse a situation before it gets worse

To "protect and serve" isn't usually an easy thing to do.  For most of the men and women in law enforcement and the military, there is a lot of training involved.  The better the training, the better the chances that lives will be saved.

There is a police and military  training facility in Ogden unlike any other in the western U.S. It's about as real as fake can get.  Real cops.  Real weapons.  Real scenarios.  But once the suspect is caught, it's sometimes a good thing the entire event is just a facade.  It's called the Swanson Tactical Training Center.

There's a training video in the works, targeting a troubling trend among American combat veterans. Some who struggle with mental health issues end up in deadly standoffs with police, and the state Department of Veterans Affairs hopes the video will do something to prevent it.

The video aims to reduce the stigma of P.T.S.D. and show law enforcement officers they can reduce the volatility of encounters with combat veterans, especially if they better understand the vet's experience and use that in a clam approach.

Starting in January, Outdoor Channel will be airing an exciting new television show "The Best Defense".  Featuring Rob Pincus and Michael Janich as the co-hosts and instructors, The Best Defense will bring their practical approach to personal and home defense to the viewer through traditional and cutting edge methods. 

Taping in November will be done at the new Swanson Tactical Training Center in Utah at their new world class scenario training area.

Training to make law enforcement officers more sensitive to explosive situations involving the mentally ill is expanding rapidly, not only in Utah but throughout the world.

 

Police officers have dealt with unstable people who perhaps needed not so much force but empathy to bring them down.
